Here are some electrical tips to keep you and your family safe!
- Do not place power cords under rugs, carpets, or furniture and never staple or nail cords to walls, baseboards or any other objects.
- Try to avoid using multi-plug sockets. Check behind your TV...Are the CD player, VCR, stereo, cable box, and tape deck all plugged into one another? Before you add that new video game ask yourself, "Am I playing with fire here?"
- Keep all flammable materials away fromboth lamps and heaters. Place electric heaters far away from well-traveled areas where someone might trip and fall on it.
- Place electrical appliances at a safe distance from sources fo water, like tubs and sinks.
- Check to make sure that all electrical items in your home are certified by a nationally recognized independent testing lab, such as CSA Group, MET Labs or Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
- Check electrical cords for worn spots or frayed wires. Don't mend it; replace it! Homemade repairs are a common source of fires.
- Use extension cords sparingly and only for short amounts of time. Too many appliances plugged into one cord causes overheating. One of every six home fires is started by overheated wires.
